The Hudson Guild Theatre Company presents THE HIP HOP MISANTHROPE Moliere meets the world of hip hop.

Whats up People!!
This is Luff, I hope everything is good with you today, by the grace of God:

I hope you will have time to come, and show love
to me and the theater company of the Hudson Guild Theater, on my first
lead role as Alceste in "The Misanthrope"

The Hip Hop Misanthrope is a crackling new adaptation of Moliere's
classic comedy, set in the contemporary world of the hip hop music
industry. Moliere's 17th century milieu of court poets and their
entourages --- all obsessed with word play, fashion, gossip and status
– translates remarkably well to the modern world of wealthy music
producers. His wit and insight into the foibles of human nature are
eternally relevant.

Since 1895, Hudson Guild -- Chelsea’s foremost community center -- has
offered a wide variety of arts programs which enrich the cultural
awareness of those who come from disadvantaged circumstances. Hudson
Guild Theatre Company was created in 1994 to provide the local
community with greater access to live performance in the Guild’s
well-known, intimate theatre space. The Company brings together
people of diverse ages and backgrounds to work together closely on
challenging, unfamiliar and thought-provoking projects.

Jim Furlong, Hudson Guild’s Director of Arts, is adapting and directing
The Hip Hop Misanthrope. At Hudson Guild, Furlong has staged a wide
variety of productions including The Letter, Three Sisters, Alice in
Wonderland, Ghosts, Civil Sex (The Life of Bayard Rustin), Sketches of
Blanche by Tennessee Williams, Hamlet, and a remarkable 90 minute
adaptation of Wagner’s Ring.

Production design is by Sheryl Liu, a recent graduate of the MFA Design
Program at the University of California at Irvine. Sheryl recently
designed the revival of The Emperor Jones for the Jose Limon Dance
Company. Costume design is by Caitlin Cisek, another recent graduate
from University of California at Irvine. A skilled and diverse group
of talented young actors are in the cast, many of whom have appeared in
previous HGTC productions.

The performance schedule is listed below. Reservations can be made by
calling 212-760-9817. In support of the Company’s goal to bring
theatre to underserved audiences, admission is “pay what you wish.”
Hudson Guild Theatre is located at 441 West 26th Street (between Ninth
and Tenth Avenues) in Manhattan and is served by the C/E trains at 23rd
Street and Eighth Avenue.
